Outdoor Learning Certification Program

Thank you for your interest in taking the Outdoor Learning Certification Program! EECD is incredibly excited to offer this support to educators across the province who are engaging in this practice. Please follow the registration link that aligns with your district, as we only have space for 25 educators in each district. After this, registrants will go onto a waitlist, and should more spaces become available, we will reach out in order of application!

French Immersion educators have the opportunity to take this course in French, which will better support implementation in class and is highly encouraged! That selection takes place during the registration process. You should expect to receive an email from Press Books if you are successfully registered, these sometimes go to junk folders, so please check there as well for log in information. You will have 2 months to begin the course once registered, and until June 2026 to complete this course. If you fail to begin the course within 2 months, or, at any point you feel you will not be able to complete the course in time, please let us know what supports are needed, or if you wish to give up your place to a waitlisted individual.

“Outdoor learning is being increasingly adopted by educators to enhance student learning and to support the physical, emotional, and mental health of teachers and students. This work and the content you will learn in the Outdoor Learning Certification Program is a key step to support these issues, along with other key social and environmental issues such as Indigenous ways of knowing, environmental and climate change, and health and well-being. This certification will give you the confidence to take your learning outside, whatever the topic or weather. From setup, permissions, and planning to programming and assessment, this course will give you the tools to embed outdoor learning into your teaching practice. You do not need a background in outdoor education, environmental education or land-based education to successfully integrate the course materials into your teaching. Your willingness to experiment with new teaching practices and the notion of where learning happens is all that is required.

Navigating inclement weather in OL with Take Me Outside

This engaging and practical webinar brought together educators from across New Brunswick to explore how outdoor learning can thrive regardless of the weather. Hosted by Take Me Outside in support of teachers completing the Outdoor Learning Certification Course, the session focused on building confidence, creativity, and a spirit of adventure when teaching outdoors—especially on the days when the sky doesn’t entirely cooperate.

What will you learn?

Educators were guided through strategies to:

  • Plan for unpredictable weather
  • Embrace a positive mindset around weather as a learning opportunity rather than a barrier.
  • Use gear, routines, and backup plans to keep outdoor learning safe, fun, and productive.
  • Connect outdoor practice to the NB curriculum through experiences that are hands‑on, place‑based, and meaningful—even on wet, windy, or snowy days.

Inclement weather is not an obstacle to outdoor learning but a natural part of living and teaching in a province shaped by four distinct—and sometimes dramatic—seasons. With the right preparation, even challenging weather can deepen student learning and strengthen their connection to the natural world.

Why Navigating Weather Matters in New Brunswick

Teaching outdoors in New Brunswick often means embracing conditions that shift quickly and vary widely across the province. Educators may need to navigate inclement weather because:

  • Seasonal extremes are part of our landscape. From nor’easters and freezing rain to humid summers and sudden downpours, NB weather offers authentic opportunities to model adaptability and problem‑solving.
  • Students benefit from outdoor time year‑round. Regular access to natural spaces supports wellbeing, focus, and creativity—even (and sometimes especially) in less‑than‑perfect weather.
  • Weather teaches inquiry skills. Real‑time observation of wind, precipitation, temperature, or seasonal change invites rich scientific and exploratory learning.
  • Outdoor learning spaces expand possibilities. With many schools accessing woods, fields, shorelines, and community spaces, educators often encounter micro‑climates that provide unique teaching moments.
  • Resilience is part of our provincial identity. New Brunswick communities have long adapted to the elements; outdoor learning allows students to build that same comfort and confidence.

A Supportive Step in the Certification Journey

This webinar complements the Outdoor Learning Certification Course by offering practical strategies and mindset tools educators can apply immediately. Whether teachers are new to outdoor pedagogy or looking to refine their practice, the session encourages them to lean into the full range of weather New Brunswick has to offer—and to help students do the same.
