Webinar - Navigating inclement weather in OL with Take Me Outside
Navigating inclement weather in OL with Take Me Outside
This engaging and practical webinar brought together educators from across New Brunswick to explore how outdoor learning can thrive regardless of the weather. Hosted by Take Me Outside in support of teachers completing the Outdoor Learning Certification Course, the session focused on building confidence, creativity, and a spirit of adventure when teaching outdoors—especially on the days when the sky doesn’t entirely cooperate.
What will you learn?
Educators were guided through strategies to:
- Plan for unpredictable weather
- Embrace a positive mindset around weather as a learning opportunity rather than a barrier.
- Use gear, routines, and backup plans to keep outdoor learning safe, fun, and productive.
- Connect outdoor practice to the NB curriculum through experiences that are hands‑on, place‑based, and meaningful—even on wet, windy, or snowy days.
Inclement weather is not an obstacle to outdoor learning but a natural part of living and teaching in a province shaped by four distinct—and sometimes dramatic—seasons. With the right preparation, even challenging weather can deepen student learning and strengthen their connection to the natural world.
Why Navigating Weather Matters in New Brunswick
Teaching outdoors in New Brunswick often means embracing conditions that shift quickly and vary widely across the province. Educators may need to navigate inclement weather because:
- Seasonal extremes are part of our landscape. From nor’easters and freezing rain to humid summers and sudden downpours, NB weather offers authentic opportunities to model adaptability and problem‑solving.
- Students benefit from outdoor time year‑round. Regular access to natural spaces supports wellbeing, focus, and creativity—even (and sometimes especially) in less‑than‑perfect weather.
- Weather teaches inquiry skills. Real‑time observation of wind, precipitation, temperature, or seasonal change invites rich scientific and exploratory learning.
- Outdoor learning spaces expand possibilities. With many schools accessing woods, fields, shorelines, and community spaces, educators often encounter micro‑climates that provide unique teaching moments.
- Resilience is part of our provincial identity. New Brunswick communities have long adapted to the elements; outdoor learning allows students to build that same comfort and confidence.
A Supportive Step in the Certification Journey
This webinar complements the Outdoor Learning Certification Course by offering practical strategies and mindset tools educators can apply immediately. Whether teachers are new to outdoor pedagogy or looking to refine their practice, the session encourages them to lean into the full range of weather New Brunswick has to offer—and to help students do the same.
