Accessing the Oral Proficiency Assessment Tool (OPAT) in D2L
This guide will help you access the OPAT and its supporting resources in NBVLC.
What is the OPAT?
The Oral Proficiency Assessment Tool (OPAT) supports FSL educators in assessing learners’ oral proficiency using descriptors from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The results help educators identify learners’ specific language needs, plan targeted instruction, and clearly communicate strengths and next steps for continued language development.
There are two options for accessing the tool and the professional learning resources that support its use. Both are outlined below:
Which option is right for you?
If you want to learn how to use the tool but are not ready to set it up with students, click here to access the professional learning.
Option 1: Create a new course for the tool
Use this option if you would like a separate D2L course for the assessment tool.
Sign in to the NBVLC
Navigate to the New Brunswick Virtual Learning Centre login page, and then select the blue New Brunswick Teacher & Student Login button

Enter your NBED login information
Sign in using your regular Microsoft NBED credentials.
These are the same credentials you normally use to access your NBED Microsoft account.
Create a new course
Once you are signed in, select Create Course

Name the course and choose the correct department
a. Enter a Course Name for your course.
b. In the Department dropdown menu, select Oral Proficiency Assessment Tool
Selecting the correct department is what makes the Oral Proficiency Assessment Tool and its resources available in the course.

Finish creating the course
Select Next and then Go to course homepage.
If you selected Create Course by accident, do not worry. You can find your new course on the homepage in the My Courses toolbar situated on the right-hand side of the page.
Use the tool and resources
On the navigation bar at the top of the course, you will see the following icons from left to right:
- Outil d’évaluation — use this section to access the assessment tool with your learners.
- Ressources — access professional learning, instructions, and supporting resources for the tool.
- Classlist — add or manage students in the course.

You are ready to begin
Your D2L course is now set up with the Oral Proficiency Assessment Tool and its supporting resources.
Option 2: Add the tool to an existing D2L course
Use this option if you already have a D2L course and do not want to create a separate course.
Open your existing D2L course
Open the course where you would like to add the Oral Proficiency Assessment Tool.
Edit the course navigation bar
Move your pointer over the navigation bar at the top of the course.
Select the three dots (…), then select Edit this navbar
D2L may ask you to create your own copy. Select Customize this navbar and then select Yes! I’ll work with a copy of the navbar.

Add links to the navigation bar
Select the Add Links button
Find and select both tool links
In the search field, type “outil”
Select both of the following links:
- Outil de l’évaluation orale — provides access to the assessment tool.
- Ressources pour l’outil — provides professional learning, instructions, and supporting resources.
One gives you the assessment tool; the other gives you the professional learning and instructions that support its use.

Save your changes
Follow the prompts in D2L to save the updated navigation bar.
The new links should then appear at the top of your course.
Setup complete
You can now access the Oral Proficiency Assessment Tool and its supporting resources directly from your existing course.
