Outdoor Learning Series – Mentorship with United Guides and Outfitters of New Brunswick (UGONB)

October 23 @ 3:45 pm - 4:15 pm

Webinar #2: Outdoor learning through mentorship with United Guides and Outfitters of New Brunswick (UGONB)

Join Blackville High teacher Ashley Hallihan and Clay Harrison of UGONB as they give an overview of both the BHSOutdoors and UGONB programs. Together, they have created a partnership that focuses on mentorship opportunities for students to obtain experiential learnings within the outdoor industry. Their goal is to inspire others to seek out opportunities in their own communities that allow students to become more engaged in the outdoors.

Presenter(s)

Ashley Hallihan is a high school teacher at Blackville K-12 School. Outdoor education is a focus of his teachings with courses like Outdoor Education 110, Outdoor Education 120, Environmental Science 120 and for the first time this year Agriculture 110. At his previous school, Ashley started the Miramichi Valley High School Fly Fishing Club with support from the community. Currently, he has created a BHSOutdoors program where students get learning opportunities focused on the woods and waters of New Brunswick. Students and staff at Blackville School have access to an outdoor learning environment on a property that features an outdoor classroom, storage shed, interpretative trails, maple sap tap line and a hydroponic garden.

Clay Harrison is the Executive Director of the United Guides and Outfitters of New Brunswick (UGONB), the organization representing the province’s guiding and outfitting sector while promoting sustainable practices, professional standards, and collaboration across the outdoor industry. The organization’s goal is to inspire the next generation by showing that guiding and outfitting can be a rewarding and viable career path. UGONB also believes it can help bring outdoor education into New Brunswick’s school system, fostering awareness and appreciation for the province’s outdoor heritage. Clay began his career as a silviculture technician, gaining hands-on experience in forest management and conservation before transitioning into the tourism and outfitting field. For more than 26 years, he has been the owner and operator of Long Lake Adventures, a successful outfitting and outdoor tourism business known for its commitment to quality experiences and respect for New Brunswick’s natural resources.
