Level 1: Autism Training for School Personnel (K-12)
New Introductory Autism Training – Launching Fall 2026
A new Level 1 autism training course for school personnel is currently under development and will launch in Fall 2026:
Autism in School: Principles, Practices, and Effective Support
This introductory course is designed for educators and school staff supporting autistic learners in K–12 settings. It reflects updated; evidence informed understandings of autism and neurodiversity and emphasizes inclusive, school‑based practice.
Course Focus:
The training emphasizes practical, real-world application and promotes the strengths, dignity, belonging, and meaningful participation of autistic students.
Participants will gain:
- An understanding of autism and neurodiversity in school contexts
- Practical classroom and school-based strategies
- Approaches to support communication, sensory, and self‑regulation needs
- Strategies to create inclusive and supportive learning environments
- Strength based approaches that respect student dignity
Intended Audience:
All school personnel, including teachers, educational assistants, administrators, guidance counsellors, student support staff, and others supporting autistic learners.
Autism Training Options Available Now
Option 1: Register for the Current Course (Registration Open Until June 30)
ASD & Behavioral Interventions
Registration for this course remains open until June 30.
Participants will have up to one year from their registration date to complete the course.
Option 2: Wait for the New Course (Launching Fall 2026)
Registration opens in September for:
Autism in School: Principles, Practices, and Effective Support
This is a new introductory course, not a revision of the current one, and reflects a shift in both content focus and instructional approach.
Both options provide valuable professional learning. Staff are encouraged to select the option that best aligns with their learning needs and timelines.

Level 1 (Early Childhood): ASD and Behavioural Interventions: Supporting Preschool Personnel
Registration for Level 1 ASD and Behavioural Interventions: Supporting Preschool Personnel training is now ongoing, meaning that all district early childhood professionals (Family and Early Childhood, Family and Child Education, Talk With Me, etc.) may register at any time, and take up to one year to complete the course.
* Please note that this training is not available to educators at this time.
Description: A first version of ASD and Behavioural Interventions: Supporting Preschool Personnel was created for agency personnel delivering the Preschool Autism Program. This training was then adapted for professionals working with young autistic children. Another version of this training also exists for school personnel. Please note that each version of the training covers different concepts.
The training provides 40 hours of self-paced instruction with suggested benchmarks for completion, a quiz at the end of each module to ensure mastery of critical concepts, and a Certificate of Completion for those who successfully complete all nine modules. For all questions regarding the content of the training, participants can contact their facilitator. For any technical challenge, participants can communicate with a technical support representative.
This training is offered free of charge by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
Enrolment and Course Completion Information:
- New registrations are processed every Thursday, and participants will receive a Welcome Message with login information and details about how to begin the course by email (by end of day Friday).
- Participants have one year to complete the course. Suggested benchmarks will be provided to help participants complete the course within the time allowed, however, the course can be completed in less time, if desired.

Level 2 (K-12) Learning for Teaching
Level 1 is a prerequisite for Level 2, Learning for Teaching. This advanced training is offered to Education Support Teachers – Resource and Education Support Teachers – Autism. Information about registration is communicated to the districts each spring

Continuing Education and Resources
- Autism Resource Hub: The Autism Resource Hub, created by Autism Learning Partnership (ALP), is intended for New Brunswick parents/guardians of a child with ASD. This site brings together resources created by ALP and other existing resources that could help parents/guardians accompany their child. Please feel free to share with parents/guardians and colleagues.
- Autism Learning Partnership website: The Autism Learning Partnership (ALP) website houses a variety of resources for school and preschool personnel and families. It also promotes the different courses offered by ALP. Do not register for training through this website. All school staff can register for the level 1 training using the link provided in the Professional Learning and Development Opportunities above.
- ALP Youtube Channel: The Autism Learning Partnership has a Youtube channel where we share videos and recorded presentations for a general audience
- Promoting Autistic Adults’ Mental Health: If you work with learners in high school grades, you may be interested in this webinar, which was presented last December: Webinar – Promoting autistic adults’ mental health : AM-HeLP. CALI – Functional Skills for Independence: The CALI – Functional Skills for Independence is a tool that was designed to assess skills related to activities of daily living for individuals of varying ages and development level. All New Brunswick resource teachers and district support staff can have access to the assessment manual and the online resource that is meant to help individuals plan and implement effective interventions. Please communicate with your district if you need access to a manual or the website.
