Supporting Newcomer and Multilingual Learners

Supporting Newcomer and Multilingual Learners in New Brunswick Classrooms

New Brunswick classrooms are more diverse than ever, with students arriving from over 150 countries and speaking more than 100 different home languages. This professional learning video explores strategies and real classroom examples that help create culturally and linguistically inclusive learning environments where all students can thrive.

Educators will:

  • Build awareness of newcomer student experiences and language acquisition.
  • Learn key terminology and frameworks, including the CEFR.
  • See inclusive practices in action from K–12 classrooms across the province.
  • Discover practical strategies to support participation, scaffolding, and assessment.
  • Reflect on ways to tap into learners’ strengths and “funds of knowledge.”

Through authentic voices of teachers, students, and newcomer families, this session highlights the powerful role educators play in shaping welcoming and equitable schools.
